PROLOGUE: The God Complex

The summit of Vanguard Memorial didn't overlook the city; it looked down on it.

From the 100th-floor observation deck, the world was a grid of lights and insignificant heartbeats. But inside the glass-walled boardroom, the air was heavy with the scent of expensive espresso and the quiet hum of a billion-dollar legacy.

"The merger is finalized," Arthur Vane stated, his voice a low vibration that commanded the room. He didn't look at the lawyers. He looked at the man across the table—his rival of thirty years, and his only equal.

"And the condition?" Helena Sterling asked. She didn't sign the papers. She leaned back, her eyes as sharp as the diagnostic lasers her company manufactured.

"The condition remains," Arthur replied. "Our legacies are too vast to be left to mere administrators. The Vane's surgical dominance and the Sterling's biotechnological supremacy must become a single, unbreakable pillar."

"You speak of a marriage," Helena said, a faint, cold smile touching her lips. "But our children are not pawns, Arthur. They are predators."

"Exactly," Arthur said, sliding a tablet across the mahogany. On it was a live feed of the hospital's trauma bay.

In the center of the screen, two figures stood over a patient. They weren't working together; they were competing. One moved with the brutal, efficient grace of a master swordsman—Julian Vane. The other analyzed the room with the terrifying speed of an AI—Elara Sterling.

"They haven't spoken a civil word to each other since the Geneva Incident five years ago," Arthur continued. "But look at them. Separately, they are the best in their fields. Together... they are gods."

"The Apex Unit will be their cage," Helena mused, finally picking up the stylus. "We give them unlimited resources. We give them the cases the world has given up on. And we give them a contract: if they fail to co-lead, they lose their right to the throne."

"And if they succeed?"

Helena signed the document with a flourish. "If they succeed, they won't just lead the medical world. They will own it."

Downstairs, a thousand feet below the boardroom, a red light began to pulse in the Apex Unit. A heart had stopped. A life was in the balance. And for Julian Vane and Elara Sterling, the game had just begun.
